“At the foot of the cross I’m broken and I’m weak. At the foot of the cross I lay everything.”
JOEL BIDDERMAN
At the Foot of the Cross is a song that I wrote as a struggling, living by faith, singer songwriter and minister, 24 years ago. In a time of crisis and transition, I remember pouring my heart out to the Lord while finger-picking my guitar – and this song came out. This year I decided to re-record this song and release it for Holy Week, with a 6 day devotional leading up to Good Friday. I invite you to listen, read, and join me in making this a prayer for your walk too.
a journey to the foot of the cross
a six day devotional journey | starting March 24th (Palm Sunday)
Day 1: Retracing My Steps – At the Foot of the Cross
Listen: http://joelbidderman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/At-the-Foot-of-the-Cross-HI.wav Consider: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him." John 3:16-17 It happens to us all. It's only a matter of time before plans crumble, and life seems like you're caught in a maze with no way [...]
Day 2: Have You Brought Me Here?
Listen: http://joelbidderman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/At-the-Foot-of-the-Cross-HI.wav Consider: "We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love." Romans 5:3-5 (NLT) Abraham, Moses, Israel, Jesus...being led into the wilderness is [...]
Day 3: Keep Me On My Knees
Listen: http://joelbidderman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/At-the-Foot-of-the-Cross-HI.wav Consider: Alphonsus Liguori recorded a story about Francis of Assisi in his work The Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ, One day a gentleman found him [Francis] weeping and crying out with a loud voice. On being asked why he did so, he answered, “I weep for the sorrows and ignominies of my Lord: and what makes me weep the most is that we, for whom he suffered so much, live in forgetfulness of him.” And on [...]
Day 4: Broken and Weak
Listen: http://joelbidderman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/At-the-Foot-of-the-Cross-HI.wav Consider: I don't know who originally said, "The ground is level at the foot of the cross" - maybe it was Billy Graham, or someone. But I've found this to be true. In 1 John 1:5-10 it says: This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie [...]
Day 5: Oh Friend of Mine
Listen: http://joelbidderman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/At-the-Foot-of-the-Cross-HI.wav Consider: When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the [...]
Day 6: A Joy That’s Stronger
Listen: http://joelbidderman.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/At-the-Foot-of-the-Cross-HI.wav Consider: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who [...]
